Today is the 5th birthday of my professional photography career. I am grateful for all the support from my family, friends, clients and my peers because without them, I wouldn't be where I am today. I am celebrating by launching my new look brand identity.

Ben Liew RGB-2a

I have decided to remove "photography" from the main logo as the work I get is generally from repeat clients, people I've met personally, or a reccomendation. I do not advertise and thus the additional words just got in the way. I have also decided to shorten my name to Ben from Benjamin as the people I work with always end up calling me Ben anyway. It's much more personal and that is how I see my relationship with my clients. I'm not just some guy with a camera that takes photo's; I become your go-to photography guy.

Thanks for your support and here's to the future! Cheers!

September & October update

October is a third the way through and we're on the edge of ticking over to 2013, though there are a couple of months to go. I've been busier than ever in the second half of 2012, though the first half wasn't that much different - I just remember more of the second half because it happened more recently.

What's been happening you ask? Well, lots. Skrambled Eggs happened - The third year that the smart phone photography exhibition featuring 12 experienced and professional photographers. I'm also working on branding and marketing for not only Benjamin Liew Photography, but another two other businesses which I am running in parallel to my normal business. More news on those two another time.

I've hung out with the Panda's at Adelaide Zoo while Simon Bryant cooked up a storm for a new corporate client of mine during a 3 day conference, I've had the privilege  of photographing Jack Thompson at the State Library of South Australia, have ventured down to one of SA's famous wine regions - McLaren Vale to photograph a corporate event and I even spent a day photographing (and eating) chocolate made by Wendy at Four Winds Chocolate while Emma Kate Creative did all the awesome chocolate styling.

Panda - Photo-a-day 2012

The rest of this month is going to be just as crazy especially with the Variety Adventure TV doco coming up. I'll be covering the whole thing from start to finish while exploring South Australia's Limestone Coast. Last year I came back with the photograph of Ned which ended up being finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize, Canberra and only one of two South Aussies from 46 total finalists across Australia. I can't wait to see what I see at this years trek.

My photo-a-day project for 2012 has been progressing and I've only missed one day so far. I though the world was going to end but in reality, I had just forgotten to take a photograph on that day, so it was all good in the end. You can check out my Facebook Page to see all the latest pics in the Photo-a-day album. I've also included a few at the end of this post.

Birds on a wire (Photo-a-day 2012)

French Flowers - Photo-a-day 2012

Flowers were part of Emma Kate's exhibition - Rêverie: stories of living life à la française

Photo-a-day 2012

3 (or 4) shades of shadow - shot for the Photo-a-day 2012 project

That's it, we're now up to date. I dare say that you can expect more updates from me more regularly from now on. If you want an update sooner, feel free to pick up the phone and give me a call.

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012

I've been selected as a finalist in the National Portrait Prize 2012!! The image of Ned who I photographed last year has been selected as a finalist for the $25,000 prize and is currently exhibiting at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

The exhibition opening in Canberra was amazing and it truly struck me how powerful photographic portraiture is and how important it is to record our lives in this day and age. Future generations will be able to see how we lived and what we did, long after we are all gone. Despite not winning first prize, being one of 46 finalists from 1500 entries (top 3% in Australia) who made it this far is by far the biggest achievement of my career to date.

Welcome to 2012! This year is going to be an exciting one especially with the National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition coming up in March... Why is this exciting? Because I'm a finalist! The judges selected 46 images out of 1500 entries to exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. This is where they will select the sole winner of the $25,000 prize.

Amongst other various photographic awards, I have also just been named the runner up 2011 South Australian Professional Illustrative & Fine Art photographer of the year, as well as appearing in the latest Capture Magazine Annual.

In other news, I would like to introduce a brand new business - Fluff and Stuff. This business focuses on Pet Photography while Benjamin Liew Photography will still focus on corporate and commercial photography, so it's business as usual.

I hope you are healthy and happy and I wish you the best for 2012!

Warmest regards,

-Benjamin Liew
